Bronson Claims 55s Grass Title

Sherri Bronson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) recently captured the women's singles title at the USTA Women's 55s Grass Court Championships at the Germantown Cricket Club lin Philadelphia, Penn.

The 55s Grass crown was one missing from Bronson's extensive resume of national and international tournament victories, so it was a coveted victory.

"I honestly have lost so many times in the grass finals, I have forgotten how many it is," said Bronson after her win. "It felt really good to get this one."

Bronson, the second seed coming into the event, breezed through her first two rounds with straight set victories, but it got trickier near the end.

In the opening round, Bronson took out Christine Meyer (Cincinnati, OH) 6-3, 6-1 and then No. 5 seed Rita Giles (Falls Church, VA) 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfiinals.

Bronson needed to dig in to win the final two rounds, having to prevail both times after being forced to a decisive third set. In the semifinals, Bronson shook off a second-set loss to No. 3 seed Leslie Pixley (Malvern, PA) to emerge victorious 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.  In the final against No. 4 seed Kandy Chain (Los Angelas, Calif.), Bronson dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, but hung on over the last two sets to win 6-7, 6-1, 6-4.

Bronson also reached the doubles final with partner Leslie Murveit (Portola Valley, Calif.) before falling in a third-set breaker to Cindy Leprevost (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Lilian Peltz-Petow (Sarasota, Fla.) 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

The Scottsdale native Bronson is currently the second-ranked player in the nation in Women's 55s (behind Tina Kawasky of Glendale, Calif.) and No. 7 in the International Tennis Federation world rankings. She was also a member of the Maureen Connolly Cup gold medal squad at the ITF Senior World Team Championships earlier this year in Mexico City, Mexico.
