Goldwater Women's Tennis Classic
Phoenix Country Club - Phoenix, Ariz.
Nov. 8-15

Varvara Lepchenko won in dominating fashion at the Goldwater Pro Circuit Event. The second seed won her last 30 games over the course of three matches to take the title.

Varvara Lepchenko hit a groove like no other in winning her final three matches at the $50K Goldwater Women's Tennis Classic, a USTA Pro Circuit event held Nov. 8-15 at Phoenix Country Club.

Lepchenko, a 23-year-old former Russian turned American, won the last 30 games she played, including back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 wins in the semifinals and finals.

Prior to her quarterfinal match with Coco Vandeweghe, Lepchenko, the second seed, hadn't really looked all that impressive, and even struggled in her opening match with American Jamie Hampton and was a bit inconsistent in her second round match against Ryoka Fuda of Japan.

After splitting sets with Vandeweghe in the quarterfinals, Lepchenko started a run for the ages with the first of five straight 6-0 set victories.

In the semifinals, Lepchenko (who came into the tournament ranked No. 105) downed third seed Rosana De Los Rios by the double bagel score, then duplicated that feat in a hurried 40-minute final against Sacha Jones of New Zealand. Jones looked helpless against Lepchenko's onslaught on Sunday, on her heels from the get-go as Lepchenko repeatedly found corners on groundstrokes, hit several aces, and generally had Jones on a tether from the outset.

Jonas had won the previous four USTA Pro Circuit events she'd entered, making the victory even more impressive for Lepchenko, who pocketed just over $7,300 for winning the title. Jones won just under $4,000.

"I didn't really think about her (and her past results)," Lepchenko said of Jones. "I was just pretty much concentrating on my game, just trying to focus on the things I needed to do out there. That's all I can do. I really love playing on the West Coast; it's a great feeling. The weather is warm, and I feel like everything works here."

Top seeds Sharon Fichman and Mashona Washington captured the doubles crown at the Goldwater, winning a tough 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory over second seeds Marie-Eve Pelletier and Anna Tatishvili.

Several other tennis events were held in conjunction with the Goldwater tournament, drawing community support. The Opening Ceremonies & Community Outreach Day kicked off the week-long event on Nov. 8 and included kid’s clinics, sponsor clinics and qualifying rounds.  A Pro/Am and Celebrity Pro/Am event was held Monday, November 9.

The Player Party was held Tuesday, November 10 and a special Military Troops & Vets Day to honor those serving in the Armed Foces  took place on Wednesday, November 11 including a featured evening match.  A Fashion Show was held Saturday, Nov. 14 as well.

The tournament is already committed for a November date in 2010.
