USTA Southwest staff member Jeff Sikes and a young girl named Jimena work on forehand technique at the Vive tu Vida! Get Up! Get Moving! event at Cesar Chavez High School in Laveen, Ariz.

USTA Southwest and USTA Central Arizona teamed up to help put on an afternoon of tennis March 28 for kids and adults at the ¡Vive Tu Vida! Get up! Get Moving! health and wellness festival at Cesar Chavez High School in Laveen, Ariz., a southwest suburb of Phoenix. The tennis portion put on by the USTA was just part of an afternoon health and wellness festival geared towards the Hispanic community.

USTA Southwest Executive Director Julie Pek, USTA Marketing and Communications Manager Jeff Sikes, USTA Central Arizona Managing Director Geoff Russell and USTA CAZ volunteer Lancy Carr helped run children and adults alike through skills and drills sessions on court, giving several new young players - including an entire youth soccer team that stopped by - their first-ever taste of the sport of tennis.

Using the breezeway sidewalk area of Cesar Chavez High School, USTA staff and volunteers played games of singles and doubles with the energetic and enthusiastic participants on two makeshift courts with mini-nets. The USTA also gave out USTA Central Arizona wristbands and four small Wilson junior racquets as prizes, and distributed information about local programs to participants.

USTA Southwest Executive Director Julie Pek plays a little QuickStart tennis with a young participant in a soccer uniform. Young and old participants alike stopped by the USTA's tennis area at the Vive Tu Vida event.

"These type of events really connect with and get to the heart of what we are trying to do - which is reach into our communities to find potential new players of this sport," said Russell on the event's first time appearance into the Phoenix area. "I think the staff and the participants involved both had a good time and learned a lot about each other, so it was a total win-win all around."

¡Vive Tu Vida has nine other events planned throughout the United States for 2009, one of which will be in Albuquerque, N.M. on Sept. 12.
