Not playing on clay much didn’t prove to be much of an obstacle for senior women’s stalwarts and fellow Phoenix-area players Sherri Bronson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Anne Guerrant (Gilbert, Ariz.).

The two saw themselves pitted opposite one another in the finals of the USTA National Women’s 55 Clay Court Championships in Houston in the finals of the national championship age group event in Houston, March 2-8 at the Houston Racquet Club.

Bronson, the No. 4 seed, captured the title with a win over third-seeded Guerrant 0-6, 6-3, 6-2. She swept through her previous three opponents, including No. 2 seed Martha Downing, without the loss of a set, before coming up against Guerrant.

The Clay’s result capped off a torrid winter thus far for Bronson, who lost in the finals of the Babolat World Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. in January and won the Checket Cup-Les Grandes Dames in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in  early February.

"People don't necessarily know Arizona is noted for their clay court players," said Bronson. "But that doesn't mean Arizona players can't. We play a lot on hardcourts, but we've had some good results on clay in the past."

Bronson also reached the finals of the 55's doubles event in Houston with partner Kathy Barnes (San Diego, Calif.).

Bronson’s next tournament is the ITF World Senior Team Championships, April 27-May 3 in Mallorca, Spain. For complete results from the Women’s 55 Clay Court Championships, click HERE.
