Brian Cheney added to his gold ball total with two more national championship victories in late August, sweeping the singles and doubles trophies at the Men's, Women's and Mixed 60 National Indoor Championships, Aug. 18-23 at the Seattle Tennis Club in Seattle, Wash.

Cheney, who earlier this summer was named to the USA National team traveling to the World Senior Championships in Antalya, Turkey, barely snuck out the singles title in Seattle. The top-seeded Cheney had all he could handle in his final two singles matches, needing third sets in both the semifinals and final to prevail.

In the singles final, Cheney took on second-seeded Hugh Thomson of Norcross, Ga., and the two dueled to a third-set tiebreaker before Cheney emerged victorious with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 victory.

Cheney paired with partner Dan Bohannon (Orange, Calif.) to claim the doubles crown. The top seeds took out Thomson and Jerry Kirk (Atlanta, Ga.) 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Another Phoenix-area native also posted a strong result at the tournament. Shelia Johnson (Peoria, Ariz.) reached the women's 60's doubles final with partner Ellen Goodman (Winter Park, Fla.). The third-seeded Johnson-Goodman pairing won three rounds including a tight, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 win in the semifinals over No. 2 seeds Barbara Hubbard (Lihue, Hawaii) and Janet Watanabe (Bluffton, S.C.). Johnson and Goodman pushed top seeds Mary Delay (Woodinville, Mass.) and Molly Hahn (Belmont, Mass.) in the finals before falling 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

Johnson also reached the Round of 16 in singles.
