USTA National Team Championships
B 18s - Urbana, Ill. (July 26-29)
G 18s - Novato, Calif. (July 29-Aug. 1)

Mele Iongi (Mesa, Ariz.) will be one of a dozen boys and girls USTA Southwest juniors competing at the USTA National Team Championships in late July.

Section representatives for the most prestigious junior team tennis event in the nation - the USTA National 18s Team Championships - were recently chosen. These events, formerly known as Junior Davis Cup - bring together the top talent in the nation for a four-day team competition modeled closely on the collegiate dual match format, and with ranking points on the line.

The 2008 USTA National Team Championships are comprised of players from each of the USTA's 17 Sections battling it out on court for national bragging rights as the nation's top Section team.

The format for each match consists of three doubles matches and six singles matches, the same format used in college competition. A Section will earn one team point per singles match win and one point for winning two of three doubles matches.  The first team to four points wins the match and advances to compete in the next round.

The Boys' 18s event is held on the campus of the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign at the Atkins Tennis Center
. The team will be coached by Geoff Russell  of Tempe, Ariz. and the USTA Central Arizona president. For more information on the USTA Boys 18s National Team Championships including draw, schedules and results, click HERE.

The Girls 18s team championship will be played in Novato, Calif. at the Meridian Rolling Hills Sports Club from July 29-Aug. 1. The girls squad will be coached by Gary Druckman (Gilbert, Ariz.). For more information on that event, click HERE.

USTA Southwest has already had a winner at the girls event, before a ball has even been struck. Mele Iongi of Mesa, Ariz., currently the Section's top-ranked player in Girls 18 singles, was named one of three winners of the 2008 Schroeder Scholarship, a $1,200 stipend to help attend the USTA National Girls 18s Hard Court Championships in Berkeley, Calif.
