Tennis Helping Hands – Serving Hope

March 3, 2008 04:17 PM

Dear Tennis Player,

I am the captain of the Anthem First Ladies, 3.5, team and writing to ask the members of the Tennis community for assistance.

On Monday morning, I went to our courts to prepare for our home match.  As I was setting up the score cards, I received a phone call from the husband of one of our players to tell me that his wife, Deanna, would not be able to play in that match or play tennis at all for some time as she had been in an accident over the weekend. Deanna is a wife and mother of two boys, ages 2 and 4. She and her family live in Anthem.

Deanna was at a home Saturday evening and, while walking across the patio, tripped and fell into an active and uncovered fire pit that was in the patio.  Unable to get out and alone on the patio, she struggled for some time, using her hands for leverage.  By the time someone in the home saw her, she was out of the pit, her clothing on fire, her hands severely burned.  She was airlifted to the Maricopa County Burn Unit with 75% burns on her right hand, 80-90% burns on her left hand and additional burns on her legs and back.  She has already had two surgeries, one to relieve the fluid buildup, a second to see if the artificial skin grafting will take.

The Anthem Mom’s Group and our tennis team are trying to help with the financial burden, home care, cooking for the family, and day care.  The family does not have insurance.  She will be in the burn unit at least a month if not longer. We are hoping our tennis community would like to help, as well.  We are collecting gift cards to Safeway, Fry’s, Wal-Mart and Visa for the family. Day care has been provided by Creative Castle for the year.  If you or your team would like to assist in purchasing gift cards, we would truly be grateful to you.

Should there be additional complications that require a major fundraising effort, we will host a tennis tournament to raise additional funds and the tennis community will, again, be contacted.  In the meantime, anything you can do is greatly appreciated.

Gift cards may be sent to her family with a note from your team to:  The Scott Family, 3732 W. Wayne Lane, Anthem, AZ 85086.  (Deanna and Grant).

If you have questions, or would like additional information, please contact me.  Liz Turner at:  elizabethturnerus@yahoo.com or 623.640.8417.

Many, many thanks to you all for your assistance.  You are loved,

Liz Turner, Captain Anthem First Ladies
