March 27, 2006 03:49 PM

Senior women’s tennis is thriving in the Phoenix area.  Four of our women were recently selected by the USTA to represent the United States at the 2006 International Tennis Federation World Senior Team Championships!  Our players are: Anne Guerrant, Gilbert, AZ, Ching Ling Chang, Phoenix, AZ, Sherri Bronson, Scottsdale, AZ and Jessica Schlotterback, Tempe, AZ

Teams from all over the world in the age groups from 35 to 55 will compete in Durban, South Africa, April 17-22, 2006.  The USTA selects the top four players in each age group for the US teams.  Of the twenty players chosen from the entire country, four are from our area!
Anne Guerrant will be playing captain of the Women’s 55 Maureen Connelly Cup Team.  She was the #1 Women’s 55 player in the world in 2004.  She won the W55 US National Clay and Grass Court Championships and went on to win the ITF W55 World Championship earning the ITF #1 World Ranking, the best player in the world in her age group. Mrs. Guerrant never lost a match in the Women’s 55’s in 2004!  Last year, after teaching at “Semester at Sea”, she won the W55 Clay and Grass Court Championships.

Ching Ling Chang will also be playing on the Maureen Connolly Cup Team. She has a long, strong record, including winning the 2005 Fiesta Bowl Championship. In 1972 Ms. Chang represented Taiwan on their Federation Cup team.

Sherri Bronson will be playing captain of the Women’s 50 Maria Esther Bueno Cup team.  In 2004 she won the ITF World Championships in Women’s 50’s.  In 2005 she was a finalist in the ITF World Championships.  Bronson was the 2005 Southwest Player of the Year.

Jessica Emmons Schlotterback is well known to old timers here as a top junior in the Southwest. After graduating from UCLA, she played the pro circuit. In 2005 she won the Women’s 30’s National Grasscourts and Fiesta Bowl tournaments. This will be her first appearance on the Women’s 35 Suzanne Lenglen Cup Team.

Our players will provide experience, leadership and skill to their teams and will all be tremendous assets.  We’re proud of them.  We wish them well in bringing the cups back to the US.
